Why Are Your Periods So Painful? (It’s Not “Just How You Are”)
The usual culprits are high inflammatory prostaglandins, estrogen dominance + low progesterone, toxins + sluggish detox, gut & histamine issues, insulin resistance, and—big one—living out of sync with your menstrual cycle. Endometriosis adds another layer of inflammation and nerve sensitisation.
(Education only. If pain is severe, new, or worsening, seek medical care—especially for fainting, bleeding through a pad/tampon hourly, fever, or pain outside your period.)
The Pain Recipe: What’s Really Going On
1) Prostaglandins: the “cramps” chemicals
Your uterus makes prostaglandins to shed the lining. Too many = stronger, longer cramps + nausea/diarrhoea.
• Raised by overheated seed oils/ultra-processed foods and frequent sugar spikes
• Worse with chronic stress and poor sleep
• Improves with omega-3s, magnesium, and B vitamins
2) Estrogen dominance + low luteal progesterone
When estrogen runs high (or clears slowly) and progesterone runs low, you often see heavier bleeds, clots, breast tenderness, mood swings—and more pain.
• Sluggish estrogen detox: low fibre, few crucifers, low choline/magnesium/Bs
• Gut “estrobolome” dysbiosis: bacteria that recirculate estrogen
• Xenoestrogens: plastics, pesticides, fragrances, thermal-receipt coatings
3) Toxins & sluggish detoxification
Detox is biology (liver phases, bile flow, daily bowels)—not juice cleanses. Pain trends up when:
• There’s constipation (estrogen reabsorbs)
• Low intake of crucifers/sulforaphane, fibre, minerals
• Home load is high: synthetic fragrance, mould, poor ventilation, non-stick fumes, microwaving plastic
4) Endometriosis (endo)
Endo is inflammatory tissue similar to endometrium found outside the uterus. It can cause deep pelvic pain, pain with sex/bowel movements, ovulation pain, and fertility issues. Drivers and patterns:
• Estrogen sensitivity/dominance
• Immune dysregulation and high inflammatory mediators
• Nerve sensitisation (pain signals amplified)
(Management is usually multimodal: medical care + anti-inflammatory nutrition, gut/liver support, nervous-system work, pelvic physio, and cycle-smart training.)
5) Histamine & mast cell piece
High estrogen can raise histamine; histamine can worsen cramps, headaches, hives, anxiety—often worst pre-period.
• Trigger foods: fermented foods, alcohol, aged cheeses (and poor gut health)
• Look for a pattern of pre-period headaches, flushing, itchy skin, sinus issues
6) Insulin resistance & the blood sugar rollercoaster
Glucose spikes drive inflammation and higher prostaglandins. A “healthy” high-carb breakfast plus coffee and all-day grazing often keeps this loop alive.
• Anchor mornings with 30–45 g protein and fibre
• Avoid constant snacking; favour defined meals
7) Living out of sync with your menstrual cycle
You’re not designed to train, fast, and work the same way every week. Late luteal needs more minerals, a little more carbohydrate, and gentler training. Over-fasting or HIITing through late luteal can suppress progesterone → pain, insomnia, cravings.
Fix the Foundations (Cycle-Smart)
From here, sync food, fasting, and training to each phase so inflammation drops and progesterone is protected. In the full guide, I map exact fasting windows, meals, supplements, and workouts for each phase.
Ready for relief? Start tracking your cycle today and make one change per week (protein-anchored mornings, daily crucifers, magnesium at night). If you want my phase-by-phase calendars, grab the Cycle-Synced Fasting Blueprint or book a Hormone & Pain Audit for a personalised plan.
