Estrogen Dominance: Why You Feel Puffy, Wired… and Stuck (and how we fix it the Vaida way)
“I eat clean, I train, but I still feel puffy, moody, can’t sleep before my period, and the weight sits on my belly.” If this is you, you may be dealing with estrogen dominance—either too much estrogen relative to progesterone, or estrogen that isn’t being cleared efficiently.
(Education only. Work with your clinician for diagnosis/treatment. The plan below reflects my cycle-synced, fasting-aware method.)
What “estrogen dominance” really means
• Relative, not always absolute: progesterone too low in luteal, or estrogen recirculates instead of clearing
• Shows up as: heavier/longer bleeds, clots, breast tenderness, PMS/PMDD, anxiety, sleep-onset insomnia, headaches, water retention, painful periods
• Common in high-performing women: stress + under-recovery + late-luteal over-fasting crushes progesterone
Why it happens (the real-life version)
• Estrogen detox bottlenecks: sluggish liver conjugation (low protein/choline/B-vitamins/magnesium) and bile flow → estrogen recycles
• Estrobolome dysbiosis: gut bacteria produce β-glucuronidase → un-packages bound estrogen so it’s reabsorbed
• Xenoestrogens: plastics, receipts (BPA/BPS), synthetic fragrance, pesticides → constant “background estrogen noise”
• Stress curve: cortisol dysregulation blunts ovulation quality → weak luteal progesterone
• Blood sugar swings: spikes → inflammation → higher prostaglandins and PMS
Symptoms women tell me (do these sound familiar?)
• Perfect all day then evening cravings, glass of wine or sweet “to switch off”
• 2–4 am wake-ups, hot then cold, busy brain
• Face/jaw/belly puffiness, tender breasts before bleed, period pain day 1–2
• Motivation dips even though you’re disciplined
The Vaida Framework: cycle-synced, detox-smart, dopamine-calm
• Power Phases (Day 1–10 and 16–19): 13–16h fasts if stress is low; ketobiotic plates (protein + non-starchy veg + good fats); daily crucifers; strength training
• Ovulation (Day 11–15): cap fasts at 13–15h; add clean carbs (fruit/roots) and zinc/B-vitamins to protect progesterone coming next
• Late Luteal (Day 20 → bleed): no aggressive fasting; 12–13h max; increase roots/squash/citrus; magnesium nightly; gentler training (walks/Pilates)
Detox like a clinician (without the chaos)
• Protein at every meal (30–45 g) to fuel Phase 2 liver detox; eggs for choline
• Crucifers daily (broccoli, cauliflower, rocket); consider broccoli sprout/sulforaphane food use
• Fibre 25–35 g/day (chia/flax/veg/berries); aim for 1+ formed BM/day so estrogen exits
• Minerals: magnesium glycinate at night; pinch of mineral salt in water if you run low
• Estrobolome support: fermented foods as tolerated or targeted probiotic; reduce alcohol
Home & beauty audit (quick wins)
• Glass/steel for hot food; do not microwave plastic
• Fragrance-free laundry/cleaning; ditch scented candles/plug-ins
• Choose simple, paraben-free skin/hair; fewer products, higher quality
• Improve ventilation; manage moisture/mould; cook with olive oil/ghee (avoid reheated fryer oils)
Morning & evening rhythm (dopamine + sleep = hormones)
• Morning: light outside, movement, and a protein-anchored first meal (never oats first—your glucose will ride a rollercoaster)
• Deep work blocks (90 minutes), then a real break; celebrate micro-wins to feed dopamine
• Evening: dim lights, warm shower, magnesium, phone out of bedroom; finish dinner 2–3 h before bed
14-Day Estrogen-Calm Kickstart
Daily: protein 30–45 g/meal • crucifers • 2 × 20-min walks • 7.5–9 h sleep
• Days 1–3 of bleed: gentle; no hard fasts/HIIT; warm mineral-rich meals
• Days 4–10: 13–16h fasts if stress is low; strength train 2–3×; remove fragrance/plastic touching food
• Days 11–15: keep fasts 13–15h; add fruit/roots; prioritise hydration, zinc/Bs
• Days 16–19: ketobiotic focus; crucifers daily; one longer walk after dinner
• Day 20 → bleed: no aggressive fasting; add roots/squash at dinner; magnesium nightly
When to check labs
• Cycle-timed estradiol/progesterone (progesterone ~7 days after ovulation), prolactin, fasting insulin, HbA1c, ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid panel
• DUTCH test if symptoms persist (estrogen metabolites, cortisol curve, 5α-DHT tendency)
